A Little Background

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

A few weeks ago, Hubby and I made good on our intentions and took the family to church on Wednesday night. We had supper, dropped the boys off in the nursery, and then wandered into the class we thought sounded good - Missional Life. This church makes mission trips every year to places like Honduras, Kenya, and Nicaragua. We would like to go sometime. We thought this class would be a good place to start.

Well, it was. But the class wasn't really about mission trips. It was more about living a missional life, right here, right now - your everyday life.

Squirm.

The ultimate question of the class was, "What is God calling you to do with your life?" Yeah. That. The hard question. The big one that gets tangled up with, "What do I want to be when I grow up?" and "Why isn't all this more fulfilling?" and "What can I do that actually is fulfilling?" You know, all that fun stuff.

So, we've had a few weeks to read, study, and think on that, and honestly, it has been great. Therapeutic. Everyone in the class is asked to share their "call story," and my turn is coming up on Wednesday.

Part of what I will say is that I feel God is calling me to write this blog. He put the idea in my head, and it has been nagging at me for months. I have been about to explode with stories, words, ideas, thoughts, feelings, and well - here they are. I have been so inspired, so helped, by other mothers, I feel I must join in the conversation. I feel silly, presumptuous, unworthy - but I'm trying to be brave. We all have our ways of contributing. This is mine.

Please don't think that I'm sitting here, with a tidy little life, figuring it all out. Life is hard. Sometimes mine is stressful, frustrating, sad, and scary. But this blog is about finding the good. My failure to mention the bad is not because it doesn't exist. It is a purposeful exclusion. What I aim to contribute is something positive.

So, that's my background. At least part of it. Here is some food for thought for you: What is God calling you to do with your life? Are you doing it?

  1. Hi Courtney,
I have been following your boys' blog for quite some time now. (I roomed with Nancy at Clemson, so I stumbled upon your blog(s) through her blog.) Anyways, I have really enjoyed reading your boys' blog as well as this new one...your writing style is great. You have a knack for telling a story, and I can so relate to many of them. Kudos to you for trying to fulfill what you feel called to do! :)

  3. Yes, finally, I am fulfilling my calling...um, I think! I wrote it in the "About Sara" section of my new website. Wasn't sure if I should share so much on it, but then I figured why not? And it feels liberating!

  6. Courtney, you didn't win that English award senior year in high school for nothing! I know you were surprised when your name was called, but you deserved it! Dad and I were proud then and we still are.

  7. Courtney, I love this! It's always enjoyable to read about everyone's families and kids, but this is so different. It is definitely encouraging and inspiring! I have wrestled with those questions so much! Going into a new season of our life, the grappling will begin all over again. Thanks for your obedience to God...you will definitely impact others with this!

God Bless as you write your blog and walk with Jesus. He is faithful in the big things ans the little things. The londer I live, the more I learn that His Mercys are new every morning and needed every moment! Great to meet you!
