When You Grow Up

Can you see me taking the picture?

Big Guy is in a phase where he loves the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" His standard answer is, "A fireman!" Sometimes he adds, "A worker-man, and a fireman," or "A soccer man and a fireman." But always, a fireman.

He likes to turn the tables on me and ask, "Mama, what do you want to be when you grow up?" If I answer literally, "I am grown up," or "Your mother," he just shakes his head and asks again. "No, what do you want to be when you GROW up?"

We have this exchange regularly. Finally I told him, "When I was your age, I wanted to be an astronaut." That is the truth, and it satisfied him for a while. Until he said, "How about a fireman like me?"

I beamed. "That would be great. I would love to be a fireman like you when I grow up." He smiled and replied, "You can drive my truck!"

Best compliment ever.

Now I'm tossing the hot potato back to you. When you were little, and someone asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up," what did you say?

No regrets or wrong answers here.

  6. Like Jim, I wanted to be a doctor (like my Dad). Plan was re-enforced after 10th grade biology. 11th grade AP Chemistry killed the dream.
