WFMW - Cork Christmas Tree

It is Works for Me Wednesday, and do you know what works for me?

A wine cork Christmas tree!

Now let me explain. Hubby and I have been saving wine corks for years. We have a large pottery container-thingy (proper term) that my sweet brother gave us as a wedding gift. For the last 7 years, we've been tossing wine corks in there, and it recently reached capacity. As I stared at it last week and wondered what to do with all those corks, a vision of a Christmas tree popped into my head.

I don't get craft visions very often, so I jumped on it. I found the hot glue gun I bought 3 years ago (and maybe used once), and fired it up. I put wax paper on the counter, and I captured the attention of my boys.

"What are you doing?"
Making a Christmas tree.
"Mama, what dat tower you making?"
Its a Christmas tree. See?
"Dat's not a Christmas tree."
The smartest guy intervenes, "Boys, leave your mother alone."

I finished, and asked, "Boys, do you like it?"
"No. It not a tree. It a tower. Why you make dat tower? Can I touch da tower?"

But it seems to have found a place in their hearts now that it has been sitting on our kitchen table for a few days. At least, I like it. I chose some of my favorite corks for the sides,

and a champaign cork for the top.

If I had it to do over again, I would not have included the random orange non-cork corks. I thought it would be a cute pop of color, but now I'm wishing it was a pure cork tree. Oh well, I've got quite a few corks left. Maybe I'll just make another one . . .

What about you?

Have you fired up the glue gun lately? Got some holiday crafts to share? Tell us what works!

  1. That is a great idea! I love it! And my favorite line of your entire post "boys, leave your mother alone". Classic. I will be giggling about that all morning because I have heard that one too many times at my own house!

  2. I almost told you 100 times how much I liked on Sunday, but kept getting distracted. Great idea!!

  3. I love that idea! I have tons, hundreds maybe, of corks at home collecting dust! You can also make a bunch of grapes out of the corks. But I love the tree idea! Hope you don't mind if I steal it! Trendsetter!

  4. That's really cute! Too bad I don;t have any wine corks...

  5. Court, I know you don't think of yourself as being crafty and creative but you ARE!!! :)

  6. I LOVE this! Since my husband and I have been saving wine corks since before we were married, I think I have a few extras lying around. I think I have a new project on tap for this weekend! Thanks for sharing!

Now let's hope my engineer-i-cal husband doesn't turn my fun, crafy project into a world's tallest cork Christmas tree project. After seeing this post, he's already drafting blueprints in his head. :)
