Some Summer Inspiration

Monday, May 23, 2011

Last week it dawned on me: Summer is almost here. Technically it doesn't start until June 21, but my kids will attend their last day of preschool this week. Our spring activities are wrapping up. Someone asked me to help with VBS.

Summer is coming.

I thought it would be nice to find a Bible verse for inspiration - something to highlight the season, and carry me through when the humidity is thick and my patience is thin. I flipped through some books and looked up multiple words in my Bible. Nothing seemed right.

Discouraged, I decided to temporarily shelve the idea. It was my morning quiet time, after all, and I thought maybe I should just get back to some "regular" stuff. I opened my Bible to where I had left off in Psalms. Back in March, I decided that I should start reading Psalms, since I've never read the entire thing. I thought I would read a chapter a day, but here it was almost 2 months in and I was just on chapter 19. . .

I glanced at my Bible's description of the chapter, "A hymn extolling the majestic glory of God as displayed in the heavens, especially in the brilliant summer sun as it moves across the cloudless sky from east to west, and the law of the Lord, which blesses the lives of those who heed it."

Well, what do you know? The summer sun.

Just what I was looking for. Funny how the timing always works out.

The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is hidden from its heat.

The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is pure,
enduring forever.
The ordinances of the Lord are sure
and altogether righteous.
They are more precious than gold,
than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
than honey from the comb.
By them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.

Who can discern his errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
innocent of great transgression.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

I will be writing about Psalm 19 all week. I hope you find it inspiring, too.

  1. Can't wait to hear more.  The Lord has had me go back to this Psalm over and over during the last three years.  I feel stuck, like I can't discern what He's trying to show me.  I'll pray for revelation through your revelation!  Thanks for sharing!

  2. I love this Psalm and am eager to see how the Lord talks to me through your words.  The Psalms feed my soul as most of them are written by a very human man, yet a man after God's own heart.

    Blessings,
