WFMW: Love (in) the Library

It is Works for Me Wednesday, and do you know what works for me?

The library.

Remember the song by Jimmy Buffett, Love in the Library?

Love in the library, quiet and cool
Love in the library, there are no rules
Surrounded by stories surreal and sublime
I fell in love in the library once upon a time

Oh, what a great song. I've always loved the library. As a child, I loved the cool AC and the freedom to browse in the beautiful historic library in my hometown.

These days, the library I visit is not beautiful or historic, but it is lovely. I do not browse for myself with children in tow, but that is okay. The children's section is our go-to spot. My kids love the library and I appreciate the variety it adds to our routine. We go regularly for books and movies. How nice to read a new book about firetrucks before bed!

The movies are fantastic because they introduce the boys to characters they might not otherwise know - classic Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck, Mary Poppins ("Let's Go Fly a Kite" was a hit and now we have two kites!), and Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel (the treasured book in cartoon form). We have enjoyed them all.

This summer, we are participating in the reading program for a second time.

(Wrist fat! Sigh. . . )

Let's not forget all the other special events going on there this summer like puppet shows, plays, children's story time, games, art projects . . .

The library is a magical place.

Do you love the library? What is your favorite thing about the library in the summer?

  1. Oh, how our family loves libraries.

  2. Hi Courtney.  I used to love the library.  My mom worked long hours and I spent many an afternoon there.  Where we live now the library is not so great and my kids are so technologically advanced that they have their noses on the computer/cellphones etc.
I do miss the library though
    God bless

  3. We have a wonderful program in our library where new readers can sign up to read to service dogs in training....we love our weekly library visits too....

  4. We love our library!  I can still remember the excitement I felt when I rode my bike to the library as a child.  I won the most books read award one year.  I now love going with Betsy.  We are working hard on her summer reading, and the fun part is that she is actually reading some of the books.  I am pretty sure she will be a library nerd like me!

  5. Love that song.

  6. Hi Courtney! This is Rachel Epps from church. I went to lunch with Lenna Kirchner yesterday and she encouraged me to check out your blog! While I don't have a little one in tow yet (3 more months!) I don't always have the time I want to browse through the stacks for books or movies. My favorite thing about the CCPL is that you can go online and reserve books and movies--from ANY branch--and have them waiting on you when you arrive! They will even email you when your books are ready, and now with the Library Elf website they remind you when everything is due. So while the kiddos are napping, browse online for yourself and you can pick up a book for you and a movie for you and Jim! Sweet and simple! Happy blogging!

  7. Hi Rachel!  I'm so glad you stopped by.  Thank you for your library tip - I had no idea!  I get email reminders about due dates, but did not realize I could reserve things online.  How exciting!  Thank you and I hope to see you soon!
