Ten Reasons Why I Read (and Enjoyed) The 11 Secrets of Getting Published by Mary DeMuth

(1) I discovered Mary DeMuth. Do you know about her? I can't remember how I first stumbled upon her blog, but I think it was when Michelle did a guest post. I spent some time exploring, and my goodness, it is a creative writing class for bloggers. She has free tutorials, oodles of encouragement, and most importantly--she has been published. Many times. She has some secrets to share.
(2) I am editing a book for some friends. I thought this might be a good resource as I try to make their book more publisher-friendly. It is.
(3) 11 Secrets teaches you how to be a better writer. Good writing is one of the keys to getting published - duh! - and I've got a lot to learn. Her tips include basic grammar and how to be a better wordsmith.
(4) Oh yeah, I just threw out the word, "wordsmith." I'm getting better already!
(5) 11 Secrets asks questions that apply to your everyday life. "What is your life message? What your uniquely gifted to do?" Those are important queries to consider, writer or not.
(6) 11 Secrets includes ideas that apply to any endeavor: backup everything, don't burn bridges, send thank you notes, and don't gossip. Great advice for all.
(7) 11 Secrets offers marketing advice, which can apply to may fields - not just writing and publishing: think outside the box, identify your customers and put them first.
(8) She tells you her story of getting published, which is inspirational. It didn't happen overnight, and it required a lot of hard work. Her story will inspire you to work hard at whatever you are doing.
(9) It is only $2.99.
(10) Or free for one lucky reader.

That's right - a giveaway!! Mary has offered to give one of you a free copy of The 11 Secrets of Getting Published

There are three ways to enter:
(1) Leave a comment confessing your most consistent grammatical error. Is it affect v. effect, its v. it's, or what the heck is a dangling participle? Were you an English nerd in high school or does the phrase "English class" still make you shudder?
(2) Share this giveaway on Facebook, and leave a comment telling me you did so.
(3) Share this giveaway on your blog, and leave a comment telling me you did so.

This giveaway will be open until Monday, August 22nd at 9:00 p.m. EST. The winner will be chosen randomly and announced on Tuesday, August 23rd.

Just so you know: After I paid a whopping $2.99 for 11 Secrets, Mary sent her subscribers (that's me!) an offer for a free copy of 11 Secrets in exchange for a review at Amazon and a blog promotion. I signed up, and gave my free copy to my book-writing friends. So, you know that I am blogging about 11 Secrets with an open and honest heart, because I bought the book and was going to blog about it anyway! Funny how these things work.

  1. Oh, yeah, I like MD. I heard her talk at She Speaks on a publishing panel. She's not only talented, but a smarty.

She knows her stuff. I've read the book, and it's good.

    Grammar errors, sigh.

Loads. Comas are an issue. I know I overuse.

  2. Wow -- that's a lot for $2.99.  I've heard so many good things about Mary!

  3. My problem obviously is just realizing not to put the space space after the period.  Oops I just did it again.  Just learned that today!

  4. THAT sounds like THAT would be a fantastic book THAT I would love to have!  (My biggest flaw........using THAT, of course!)  :0)
    Great Post....loved your humor!

  5. Most of my grammar mistakes have to do with spelling and probably sentence structure. I know it isn't uncommon to catch myself using "your" when I should be using "you're". I am always up for a great book and it sounds like this book has a lot of helpful tips on life in general.

  6. I misuse semicolons all the time. Guilty as charged. :)

  7. Congratulations, Jen - you won!  Email me and I'll get you connected with Mary and the free ebook.
