Top Ten Pieces of Advice to Myself, Solo Road Trip Edition

Today, I embark upon an incredible journey. I will back out of the driveway, solo. I will drive, and drive, and drive.

Oh, wait. Are you imagining me driving across country by myself, hair blowing in the top-down wind, and toe tapping to the non-kiddie music beat? Because I was, too. But - HA! Haaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Not quite. I am taking my boys, ages 2 and 4, on a four day trip to see some friends. Hubby will be staying home to work. (Bless his heart.) So, I'll be solo, sans parental partner, playing zone defense, questioning my sanity. . . you get the picture.

(The car packed for a previous adventure. I'm sure it will look something like this.)

Got any advice? Here is what I've come up with, so far:

(1) Bring the Veggie Tales CDs.
(2) Bring DVDs.
(3) Bring snacks.
(4) Bring gifts for the people whose homes we will trash.
(5) Pray for no more breakdowns.
(6) Pray for patience.
(7) Pray for sleepy backseat eyes.
(8) Thank God for the children.
(9) Thank God for time alone with them.
(10) Thank God for my husband and pray for a safe return to him . . .

By the way, this trip will involve me signing off the internet for a while. I know! How will I ever survive? I'm not sure, but I know YOU will be just fine because I have lined up some lovely guest posts. Even a giveaway! Seriously, you are going to want to kick me out of this space and just bring them on full time. Or at least go follow their blogs. Yes, that is more reasonable. Please do that.

In the meantime, wish me luck, say a little prayer, and come back tomorrow (and the next day, and the next day) for some inspirational treats!

  1. Gil you have to bring a trash bag in the car...because kids are so messy. The messyness seems to manifest itself while in the car too...:) Have fun!

Drive safely and have a wonderful time on your trip!

  3. I feel you! I have done 4-5 hour trips with just the boys and I but have wondered how trips any longer would go because I have family 13 hours away!

  4. Eek, road trips are hard enough with 2 parents on board!  I recently read a piece of advice I'll use for our next road trip: get a DVD from Redbox before you go, return it at your destination, get another for the drive home.  On our last road trip, we had a new DVD for the first leg of our trip and it went so much better than the drive home where we only had DVDs the kids had already seen.

Also, I like to travel with a roll of paper towels.  Best of luck!!!

  5. Just got back.  We took a trash bag and it was used!!

  6. Great idea - we will try that next time.  Amazingly, we didn't watch any DVDs on this trip.  I'm not sure how to explain it . . . they never asked, so I never brought it up.  It was strange!  We did have paper towels though - always come in handy :)
