WFMW: Back to School Feast

It is Works for Me Wednesday, and do you know what works for me?

A Back to School Feast!

I got this idea from the uber popular NieNie. (Lucky break - she blogged about her most recent Feast just yesterday!) At the beginning of every school year, she gives her children a "back to school feast," to celebrate and set the tone for the new school year. She chooses a phrase for the year, and makes it special for the children. I'm not as creative as she is, but I loved this idea so much that I tried it last year.

Big hit. The boys oohed and aahed over the table being covered in butcher block paper. They enjoyed the meal, and most importantly, they felt special. My husband thought I was a wee bit crazy, but by the end of the night he agreed that it was fun and worth it. We all got excited about the first day of school and it was a sweet way to close the last night of summer.

Mr. Potato Head and his ears demonstrated our phrase, "Listen and Obey." Those words are still spoken frequently in our house, and I would like to think that they have deterred at least some bad behavior. The idea of a school-year phrase helped enough that Hubby suggested a summer phrase - Build Each Other Up. That one even came with a Bible verse (So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. I Thessalonians 5:11) and it has been on our chalkboard since May. Many times we only have to say, "Remember our theme?" and it stops a squabble. (Seriously!)

Our feast will be on September 5th this year. I am trying to decide what our phrase will be for the upcoming school year . . . any suggestions?

Celebrating "Back to School" with a special family night works for me - what works for you?

  1. I love this idea! My kids aren't really going to school but I do plan on doing some curriculum with my oldest at home so this would be a good way to start!
I also like the idea of having a phrase for each season of life. What a great reminder for us all! As for a suggestion...what about "Freely receive, Freely give"? I would love to hear what you guys decide!

  2. Courtney, I am totaling stealing this idea from you for this year. Let me know when you decide on your theme! I am not too proud to steal that as well, and since I beat the Listen and Obey over Ella's little head one too many times, I think we need something new and fresh! Thanks for sharing!
