The Burning Bush

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

We are studying the Old Testament in my Bible study group at church. We are reading about Moses this week. I also teach two-year old Sunday School, and guess what the lesson was for Sunday?

Moses and the burning bush.

I'm not going to call it a coincidence.

I've learned a lot by actually reading these old Bible stories again. For example, I had no idea that part of God's plan was for the Israelites to "plunder" the Egyptians by simply asking for gold, silver and clothing before they left. (Exodus 3:21-22) We don't teach that in the two-year old Sunday School version.

But back to the burning bush . . . Here is what gets me:

There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, "I will go over and see this strange sight - why the bush does not burn up." When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, "Moses! Moses!" And Moses said, "Here I am." Exodus 3:2-4

What if Moses had not gone over to look? What if he had thought, "That's strange . . . but, I really don't want to get involved. I've got sheep to tend and this is going to get me off track."

Was God testing him, to see if he would show some initiative? Some child-like curiosity?

See, before I read this, I thought that God called out to Moses from the bush. "Hey, Moses! Come over here. I've got something to tell you." But no, it wasn't until Moses decided to investigate and the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, that God spoke to him.

Could it be that I've missed the Lord somewhere? Ignored a burning bush because I just didn't want to be bothered? Didn't want to get involved?

Maybe it was that friend who looked sad but I didn't want to ask. Or the child I keep thinking about sponsoring through Compassion or World Vision, but haven't done so yet.

Do you think God wants you to show some initiative? How can you do that today?

  1. That's a great point, never thought of the bush story like that! And it's so true with the "not wanting to get involved" part, too. Sadly, that's where the world is heading to - but I should resist that.

  6. Courtney - I had not noticed that before. I do wonder at the times when I have ignored buring bushes. Just prior to coming over to read your blog, I was praying to the Lord about having a more generous heart. I've also pondered Compassion International, just haven't done anything. Thank you for reminding me of the fact that I have been blessed, so should I extend that to others.

  8. its so interesting how just one verse can really make you think, isn't it?  and the thing about getting involved is, i find that God works in such amazing ways when we do get involved.
