Wisdom in the Noise

I'm reading Proverbs this summer. I'm not going to be foolish like I was last summer and announce that I'm reading it ALL this summer. No. I'm a slow reader. I read and journal. Read, linger, journal, linger, turn the page. Proverbs and I are going to be hanging out for a while.

Plus, my morning reading routine took a hit when Daylight Savings Time began in March. I haven't recovered. Maybe it is my kids' changing schedules, maybe I've just burned out on getting up early. For whatever reason, I'm finding it harder to make the early mornings my "quiet time." This has caused me great distress, because I am such a literal soul. On paper, mornings are my best shot at silent, alone time. If I don't do it then, I'll never do it! my change-resistent brain chants. Turns out, that isn't true. I can read at night sometimes, and in the morning sometimes, too. There may even come a time when I sit down during the middle of the day. While I'm learning to be flexible, I imagine my pace will not quicken. If anything, I feel like God is patting my hand and saying, "It's fine. Don't be so rigid. I'm here."
So I read. In Proverbs chapter 1, I read about finding knowledge, embracing wisdom, and accepting discipline. I wonder, do I need monkish quiet, a sacred space, or an impossible solitude to get to that point? Then it is right there,
"Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech." Proverbs 1:20-21
Wisdom isn't only in the quiet sacred spaces. She is in the middle of the movement and noise. Sure, I can find her in the quiet Bible-study times, but what about when I'm running errands with the boys? What about when I'm breaking up a squabble or cleaning up the kitchen? Can I commune with God in such a way that the quiet-time wisdom penetrates life's noise?

That's the goal. I'm working on it.

Are you able to carve out quiet time with God? Can you hear wisdom in the noise, too?

  1. I love how you take your time and ponder and journal your reading.  Wow what a great start and lesson from Proverbs too.  I just returned from a two week - yes two week retreat - lots of silence but now need to keep listening to the quiet voice of Wisdom within me even in the noise of life.  Let's find God everywhere!

  2. Oh wow, Jean. Two weeks sounds heavenly. What a super foundation for now hearing Wisdom in the noise. Thanks for stopping by.

  3. slow and steady wins the race, every time!  Yes, let's read and chew and digest and be changed! Thanks.

  4. Oh, this is so good Courtney. I think we need to be flexible when it comes to time with Him don't we? I am writing about sacred space today at www.journeytoepiphany.com. It really goes along with what you are saying. I hear Him well, in the car and the shower too. So thankful he isn't bound by our constraints when it comes to conversation.
