WFMW: The Rice Trick

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

I'm finding it hard to motivate to cook on these hot summer days. When I do, I want to make it last as long as possible. Enter, the rice trick. When we have rice, I like to cook more than we need. I save the leftovers in the fridge, but if you've ever done that, you know that the rice dries out and clumps up icky in the microwave. My trick is to sprinkle it with a little chicken stock before I zap it, and if fluffs right up.
One less reason to turn on the stove when it is stifling outside.

What are your summer kitchen tips?

  1. Chicken stock is not something I keep, but maybe water would work just the same. Thanks for the tip! I do hate to waste leftoevers!

  2. Rice freezes really nicely, too. I let my daughter make a double batch of rice (she makes waaay better rice than I do!) and then I freeze the leftovers in a ziploc or freezer container until I need some the next time. I don't have to worry about it spoiling and you just reheat it like you suggested above once its thawed.

  3. Andrea - You just made my day. I didn't realize it was that easy to freeze! I'll be adding that to my routine now. Thanks :)
