Cooking Class at The Coastal Cupboard

I had the best time last Friday morning. I met my two friends, Kim and Lenna, at The Coastal Cupboard for a Mommy's Morning Out cooking class.

It was such a treat: a cooking class is something we've talked about doing forever, we learned a TON, and somehow our schedules aligned and last Friday worked! I'm still pinching myself. 
I don't have enough time or space here to share everything I learned, but let me at least give you the basics. The class was a demonstration style set up. The twelve of us in attendance asked questions and had great conversations with Chef Stephen as he cooked. Two of my favorite (in turn, amusing and practical) tips were:
  • To stop your eyes from watering when cutting onions, stick your head in the freezer. 
  • Use kosher salt when cooking. It is less expensive than sea salt and breaks down well.

We learned a lot about cutting and chopping, since Chef Stephen loves prep work. I do not. We marveled that all the potatoes, onions, and red peppers in our corn and crab frittata were the exact same size. I kid you not. It was unbelievable.
But, we didn't just watch him cook, we got to eat. I thought we would simply "sample" the food, but this was a full meal. Delicious!

We felt like the class was educational, fun, and (with all that food, too!) definitely worth the $20-30 price tag.

If you've never been to The Coastal Cupboard, you should go. It is a gadget-filled kitchen paradise - the sort of place that would have intimidated the heck out of me years ago, but makes me "ooh" and "ahh" now.


Why the change? I've simply realized that although none of these gadgets are necessary, they can make cooking a lot of fun . . . and if it is fun, I'll do it! I had so much fun, in fact, that I totally lost track of time walking around the store after the class. I looked down at my phone - and how could this be?! - it was 11:45. Pick up time for Little Man. Oops! Thankfully, the Friday carpool line is long, and I made it with time to spare. Even better, I felt like I'd had the most productive, and simply enjoyable morning that I'd had in a long time. I learned about cooking, spent time with friends, and got to blog about it - all before noon :)
