31 Days of Quality Time :: Day 12, When the Habit Isn't Happening

{This post is part of a series. To read from the beginning, click here.}

So far, Habit No. 2 feels like a burden. It feels like one more thing to squeeze into my day. (Which totally defeats Habit No. 1, by the way.) Five Minutes of Silence taunts me, like the pansies still on my front steps.
This habit is stressing me out, which is 180 degrees from where I should be. Practicing silence is supposed to be bringing me peace. It's not.

Maybe I am going about it the wrong way. Instead of looking at this as one more thing "to do," I am going to think of it as silence appreciation. I am accomplishing that. With this renewed awareness of the importance of silence, I am (happily) looking for opportunities to quiet the noise. I've found myself driving without yapping on the phone or flipping through the radio. I have eaten lunch in complete silence while the kids were at school; no matter that it was leftover PB&J. I heard birds chirping and squirrels bickering as I walked to the mailbox. That sentence just made me think of Snow White singing with the animals - it wasn't quite like that, but you get my drift.

Still, as Andrea mentioned in the comments yesterday, it can be so hard to quiet the mind when everything is perfectly still. Lists run through our heads, and adding this habit to the list only makes that worse. No more of that. Today, I'm simply on a silence appreciation quest. No pressure, just relishing moments of quiet when I can. That habit sounds divine.

    You made me laugh on a Simple Kids' comment today (the jars) - so I had to pop over and say Thank You! It's been a rough week. ;)

  3. So happy you stopped by, Kerry - and even happier that I made you laugh! I can just picture myself absently staring into a glitter jar by the end of these 31 days . . . hope your weekend is a good one.

  4. So glad you are on this journey with me, my friend.
