The Important

Our counter, this weekend
The sun was out, the temperature was in the mid-70s, and everyone says it felt like spring this weekend. My kids were mostly inside. No flu, thankfully, just a mild fever and colds.

My youngest stayed home from school on Friday. He asked me to hold him while he watched cartoons. I did, mostly because I'd just skimmed this article by Tsh. Referencing the booklet, Tyranny of the Urgent(which I must read), she points out how what is urgent often keeps us from what is important.

The dirty kitchen, a spill on the counter, the laundry waiting in the dryer, the email for the meeting at 9:15 - all urgent. All require a quick response.

But, comforting a sick child, sitting with him, holding him, scratching his back and rubbing his hand - all important. All require me to stop reacting to the urgent and attend to the important. I have to think about it, and make the choice. Otherwise, the urgent task always wins, and what I say is important doesn't get treated as important, at all.

I'm glad Tsh reminded me of that. It made all the difference in our home this weekend.

How can you distinguish between the urgent and the important, today?

  1. Hi! I'm coming by from Em's place. Thank you for this. I don't know if you realize, but you wrote this for me. Seriously!

This week we have been home ALL week due to the flu. My 5 and 3 1/2 year old are fine, but my 20 month old has been hit hard with that and an ear infection. I am wearing the same pair of pjs I've had on all week. Haven't left the house outside of the dr visit. And this all collided with my husband's long work week so he hasn't been able to get home before 9pm.

I love my babies, but yesterday I was in TEARS. I so desperately wanted to shower, and clean the house (get rid of those germs) but baby girl cried unless I held her.

Today I will watch Winnie the Pooh for the 100th time and hold her and remember I am doing something IMPORTANT

Thank you so much for your encouragement. And thank you for stopping by Em's place!

    1. Brenna, I'm so glad you stopped by and that this was what you needed to hear. I really appreciate your kind words. After a week at home with little ones and the flu, I can only imagine how many challenges you had on your hands! I pray that you got a shower, some rest, some cuddles with your girl, and that everyone is feeling better.
