Autism Awareness - Lauren and Steven

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

I got to know Lauren DeWeese when her daughter, Ashley, and my son, Hugh, were in preschool together. I knew that Lauren had another child, Steven, but I did not know that he was autistic until I met him at a church Halloween function. He was dressed up like Jake (the Neverland Pirate) and my boys thought his costume was awesome. I thought it was awesome that Steven was there, participating in a loud, somewhat chaotic event. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him. I was also amazed that I had somehow missed this important fact about Lauren’s life. It’s not that she didn’t mention Steven; she did. It’s that she didn’t mention his autism first. I found that so admirable. Since that day, like many mothers without a special needs child, I’ve often wondered what life must be like for Lauren. It turns out that life isn’t that much different: you love your child, put your faith in God, and try to do what’s best. . .
