Ronald's Birthday

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Ronald turns nine today.

We've been sponsoring him for two years. It just so happens that Compassion sent some well-known bloggers to Uganda last week, so I've been thinking and reading about his home country more than usual.

Ronald has broadened our world view. Before he entered our lives, it would have taken me a few moments of studying Africa to find Uganda. Now I know that it's the one kind of in the middle, near the big lake.

We seek out world news on Uganda. The BBC is helpful. Over breakfast the other day, I shared with my five year old that Ugandan troops moved to help in South Sudan. He was interested, because Uganda is where Ronald lives. And Ronald is a big boy, on the other side of the world, who writes to us, loves soccer, helps his dad slaughter chickens, and lives in a "permanent house." (A permanent house -  i.e. not made of mud - is one of Ronald's favorite things to draw on his letters.) Ronald is cool. Ronald is special to both of our boys, and by extension, so is Uganda.

Because of Ronald, and the opportunity Compassion provides to sponsor him, my boys are unwrapping some wonderful gifts:

knowing someone who lives on the other side of the world,
feeling a connection to a place they've never seen,
realizing that the world is big and beautiful and varied,
believing that God made us, loves us, and cares for us, all,
and starting to understand the scope of that word, all.

So on your birthday, Ronald, thank you for the gifts you have given our family. We pray that your day is special and filled with love. And that maybe, because of you, some other family will come to sponsor another child and receive the types of gifts you've given to us.

Here's the ask: Are you ready to sponsor a child through Compassion? The Uganda bloggers are so close to reaching their goal of 400 more children being sponsored. Maybe YOU are the one who can help them reach it? Click here to learn more

  1. This is such a beautiful testimony of how giving brings such amazing, even unexpected, returns. We have a little boy on the Gaza strip through World Vision and it is always so exciting when we get a letter from him!

  2. Happy birthday, Ronald! I love how helping Ronald makes the world feel a little smaller. It's a beautiful ministry!
